Should the main one become overloaded then the backup should automatically take over and continue pumping out the water.

Although electric pumps can pump out more water than the water powered ones, one has to take into consideration that the electricity is more likely to fail in a heavy storm. Even if you have got backup batteries to run electric pumps when the electricity fails, one cannot be too sure if they would not run out of charge before the storm ends.

The solution is therefore to have a water powered sump pump. Without electricity or battery power you are assured that the water would still be pumped out of your basement. You will find that many people opt for a balance between the two. An electric pump to run as the main pump and a water powered pump to act as the backup in case the storm becomes severe.
