What are the Different Causes of Diabetes?

Diabetes is one of the most popular types of illnesses known to man. While there are certain types of people who are more prone to diabetes than others, it always helps to know the causes of diabetes just as a safety measure – so that you know what and what not to avoid in order to stay healthy.

In terms of bodily functions, diabetes is caused by the lack of insulin. The pancreas is responsible for producing this in your body, and therefore, if the pancreas is not operating properly and produces little to no insulin (also known as insulin resistance), then diabetes occurs. When insulin resistance happens, this means that your sugar or glucose cannot enter your cells properly – the glucose instead accumulates in your blood, which causes diabetes.

Other causes of diabetes include obesity and being overweight. This is a cause of concern for many people who are naturally big. To avoid diabetes, one must be careful about his or her eating habits and dietary lifestyle. While it is okay once in a while to eat in big quantities, this should not be a regular habit for anyone. If you are currently overweight, start creating a dietary program that you can follow in order to shed the extra pounds, as these make you more prone to diabetes than others.

High alcohol intake can also cause diabetes. This is a warning to the party-lovers out there who love downing alcohol on a nightly basis. While it does make you look cool and hip, large amounts of alcohol will absolutely wreak havoc in your body system. Drink only in moderation, and learn how to control your portions. Alcoholism is a serious problem, and causes more illnesses than just diabetes.

Another food-and-drink-related cause of diabetes is eating lots of food that are high in fat. Understandably, fatty food is fun to eat, but do so only in moderation. Avoid regularly taking this in, as this will certainly pave the way to diabetes.

A sedentary lifestyle can also cause diabetes. Include a regular exercise regimen in your lifestyle, even if it is just half an hour of brisk-walking a day. Exercise is good for the heart and for your energy level, and soon, you will be able to increase your exercise time as your sustenance levels go up.

These are only some of the causes of diabetes, and its symptoms and levels of severity will vary from person to person. However, in general, diabetes can be avoided if people can avoid doing what causes it. Yes, that's right – despite age and ethnicity, diabetes CAN be avoided, but only if you do the proper steps and live a healthy lifestyle.
