Treatment Methods for Fungus Under Nails

By

If you have fungus under your finger nails or toe nails, you need to explore the various treatment options available. Some treatments for fungus under nails is designed to simply prevent the fungus from spreading further, while others try to actually kill the fungus completely.

All treatment for fungus under the nails has it's good and bad though. There are several strong prescription medications for instance, which are designed to kill nail fungus. Unfortunately these medications have some dangerous side effects, and many people don't want to risk taking them. They're also quite expensive, so sometimes people simply can't afford to take these medications to begin with.

Thankfully there are other ways to treat fungus under the nails though. Most people opt for either using over the counter topical creams and ointments, or trying one or more of the home remedies that others have had success with.

Topical creams and ointments can usually be bought at any major drug store. There are several brands which say they're for treating fungus under the nails, but many people feel those don't work well at all. A more popular treatment is a cream called monostat, which is usually used for vaginal yeast infections in women. Since nail fungus is a yeast infection under the nails though, the monostat can potentially work well in treating it.

Another unconventional treatment for nail fungus is Vicks Vapor Rub. This product is supposed to be used on sore muscles, or put on your chest to help relieve head conjestion when you have a cold. Many people have discovered however, that this product sometimes cures nail fungus infections.

Whether you choose to try the monostat, vicks vapor rub, or another of the more conventional topical creams for your nail fungus, you'll need to put it on your nails at least once or twice every single day. It could take weeks before you start seeing improvements too, and sometimes it may takes months before the nail fungus is fully gone.

There are other herbal and natural remedies which are often used successfully to get rid of fungus under nails too. Some of these can be used internally to help fight the excess yeast bacteria living within your body, and some are used externally to help kill the fungus under your nail.

Herbal antibiotics and antifungals such as Garlic work wonderfully for killing fungus under the nails. It can be used both internally and externally. To use Garlic externally, on the nails themselves, just get some garlic oil to rub on your nails once or twice each day. You can use raw garlic cloves as well: Simply crush them up in a blender to make a paste, then spread that on the fungus infected nails. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then wipe it clean.

Tea tree oil is another favorite herb to use for getting rid of fungus under nails. This herb is a natural antiseptic and antifungal. Simply put a drop or two on the fungus infected nail once or twice each day.

Regardless of the nail fungus treatment you choose, cleaning under and around the nail before applying the medication will help it penetrate better. You can also lightly scratch the top of your nail using a nail file, and this will also help your fungus medication penetrate better.
