There are now a lot more parents that are opting to do homeschooling for their children. This is largely due to the fact that homeschooling has a lot of advantages. With homeschooling, the parents can tailor and customize their child's curriculum according to his needs and interests. Children who are homeschooled also learn at their own pace and won't have to deal with peer pressure. Determining the expenditures will also be the family's decision.

Some parents don't want to homeschool their children because they are not up to the task. There are others who are deterred by the homeschooling costs. There are the costs of the books to consider, as well as school supplies, membership fees to museums, libraries, theaters and other educational places, and field trips. There are also costs for the classes that students have to take but their parents can't teach them, such as foreign language, or advanced math and science. Add to this the fact that either the mom or dad would have to give up full-time work to be with their children and you pretty much have lost some big bucks right there. However, if the parents have 2 or more children that are being homeschooled, costs go down because the textbooks can be reused by the younger child. The average family is probably spending approximately $3,000 on homeschooling.

There are, however, some ways to minimize the cost of homeschooling and save money. Joining support groups can be very beneficial. A mother can offer to teach another child how to play the piano and simultaneously procure free art lessons for her own kid. There are also various web sites in the Internet that are willing to give away free school supplies. Splitting the costs of field trips with other parents by organizing the trips on the same day will also help in cutting back on the expenses. Engaging in home-based businesses will also be able to give the family additional income to make up for the expenditures entailed by homeschooling.

Despite the fact that homeschooling costs can balloon up to much more than what it would cost to put children through public schooling, the number of parents opting for this option is growing with every year. When asked why, most of them, if not all, would probably answer that having quantity time as well as quality time with their children is one of the benefits of homeschooling. Add to that the fact that they will be able to keep their kids away from the violence that keep on happening in public schools nowadays and that's just enough to show that the benefits of homeschooling far outweighs its costs.
