Trains have been a fascinating subject for children since the time the steam engine was invented. And why not? The sights and sounds most often associated with the arrival, departure and even the simple passing by of a locomotive, from the hypnotic chugging sound to the plume of steam rising from the main smokestack to the sound of wheels clanking on steel rails, have never failed to inspire wonder in people. This was perhaps the reason why, in 1946, a writer and railway enthusiast by the name of Reverend W. Awdry decided to include a character named Thomas the Tank Engine in his series of books for kids. This was the humble beginning of a character that would be known as an icon in the world of railways for years to come, as seen in the fact that the Thomas the Train set is now a ubiquitous member in the world of toys.
What started out as simply another character in a series of children’s books has turned into one with a name for itself. Today, one can see the smiling face of Thomas the Tank Engine almost anywhere, from clothing to stationery to books to board games to toys and everywhere in between. Of course, there is probably no better representation for the friendly little blue train than in the form of a Thomas the Train set, as this toy proudly displays Thomas the Tank Engine in his environment: the railway, with all its twists and turns, climbs and falls, switches and brakes.
Since his entry into the world of animation way back during 1979, Thomas the Tank Engine has been the subject of many a toy train set. The first Thomas the Tank Engine sets were often made of wood, and were only models that were meant more for display than for use on a track. Then came Meccano, the company responsible for producing the first set of this sort: it ran on clockwork, and featured a simple round track. Then improvement after improvement came, and before people know it, little Thomas the Tank Engine was winding his way over bridges, through multiple floors of track, even switching between tracks via a crossing or two. Nowadays, the most sophisticated of Thomas the Tank Engine sets boast of such features as LED lights, sounds, and steam producing devices inside the train in order to give out realistic looking smoke as the train glides along plastic tracks that fit its wheels to a T.
No matter how modern or vintage a Thomas the Train set may be, however, it is comforting to note that the character has hardly changed in over fifty years. So whether by hand, wind up or battery, you can be sure that your set will entertain for years to come.
