Thoughts on Homeschooling

More and more parents are opting to have their children homeschooled. Some of these parents say that this is a calling. The parents have to be dedicated enough to want to spend time with their children and teach them what they ought to know. Although it is a tough job to do, the home schooling advantages are many.

Just look at all the violence that are happening in schools nowadays. There have been news of a student bringing a gun to school and wreaking havoc. There are instances wherein teachers have physically abused children. More and more teenagers are getting addicted to alcohol and drugs because of the pressure put upon them by their peers. There are parents out there who have no idea about what their children are up to when they are not around. They don't hold control over who their kids hang out with and what sort of attitudes they may pick up along the way. With homeschooling, there would be no need to worry about all these. Since the children will be spending so much time with the parents, it is the parents' values that they will get, not their peers'; it is with their parents that they share such a strong bond with, not their peers. Moreover, learning does not ought to have a fixed set of hours. Learning is interwoven amongst their daily life, in the things that they do as a family.

Children who are homeschooled also learn things at their own pace. There are students in public schools that have to withstand having to go through a lesson that they have mastered already just because there are others who haven't yet. There are also those who get by without really learning some stuff and then have to be faced with the hard task of catching up when the teacher notices that they are lagging behind. In homeschooling, a child will be able to work at things on his own level and get the attention that he needs.

Admittedly, there are things that parents won't be able to teach their children. What if the child wants to learn how to speak French and the parents aren't fluent? Well, the parents can easily find someone who would be willing to offer their child lessons. If the parents are worried about homeschooling curtailing their children's ability to socialize, they need not be. They can take their children on educational trips with other homeschooled children. If there are problems, there are always ways to solve them. With its advantages, homeschooling stands to be an appealing substitute to public schooling.
